Key takeaways
- ✓This SEO for beginners Malaysia plan comes down to seven steps, done in order, using free Google tools. You can finish all seven in about 90 days with roughly 8 hours a week.
- ✓Start with Google Search Console and the technical basics. Writing content comes later, because Google can’t rank pages it can’t crawl.
- ✓Do your keyword research in English, Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese. Many of your customers search in more than one of those languages.
- ✓Track WhatsApp clicks and calls as conversions from day one. Rankings that don’t bring enquiries tell you nothing useful.
- ✓Once your time is worth more than about RM2,900 a month, or competitors already hold page 1, hiring help usually costs less than doing it yourself.
SEO for Beginners Malaysia: The 7 Steps, in the Order That Matters
People find this page by searching “how to do SEO for my website”, “learn SEO Malaysia” or “how to start SEO Malaysia”. All three get the same answer: the order you do things in matters more than how many tactics you know. Most beginners start by writing blog posts, and in most cases that’s the wrong first move. This guide gives you seven steps that each build on the one before, and you can do every one of them with free tools.
It’s worth learning. Statcounter puts Google’s share of Malaysian search at roughly 93 to 96%, and DataReportal’s Digital 2026: Malaysia report counts more than 35 million internet users, about 98% of the population. Your customers are searching on Google. The question is whether they find you.
One honest point before you start: Google says publicly that no one can guarantee a specific ranking position. That covers you, any freelancer and any agency. What you can control is whether your site gives Google every reason to rank it.
SEO tutorial Malaysia: the 7 steps at a glance
- ✓Set up Google Search Console and submit your sitemap
- ✓Find the keywords Malaysians actually type, in three languages
- ✓Fix the technical basics Google checks first
- ✓Optimise one page at a time
- ✓Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
- ✓Earn trust signals without buying backlinks
- ✓Track calls and WhatsApp clicks, not just traffic

The Free SEO Tools You Need Before Step 1
This is an SEO guide Malaysia business owners can follow with five free SEO tools. All of them come from Google and use the same Google account.
| Tool | What it tells you | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console | Which pages are indexed, which queries bring impressions and clicks, crawl errors | RM0 |
| Google Analytics 4 | What visitors do after they land, including WhatsApp and call clicks | RM0 |
| Google Business Profile | How you appear on Google Maps and in the local results, plus calls and direction requests | RM0 |
| PageSpeed Insights | Core Web Vitals scores for mobile and desktop, and what is slowing each page down | RM0 |
| Google Keyword Planner | Search volume ranges for Malaysia and keyword ideas (needs a Google Ads account, but you don’t have to run ads) | RM0 |
Ahrefs and Semrush are good tools, but they’re paid monthly subscriptions and you don’t need either in month one. They become worth paying for once you’re researching competitors’ backlinks or tracking hundreds of keywords. Until then, Search Console data about your own site is more useful than estimates about someone else’s.
Step 1: Google Search Console Setup and Your Sitemap
Search Console shows you how Google sees your site, so it comes first. Without it, you’re guessing.
Verify your domain
Add a Domain property and verify it with the DNS TXT record Google gives you (you add this in your domain registrar, such as Exabytes or GoDaddy). A Domain property covers http, https, www and non-www in one place.
Submit your XML sitemap
On WordPress with Rank Math or Yoast, the sitemap is usually at /sitemap_index.xml. Shopify generates one at /sitemap.xml. Paste the path into Sitemaps and confirm the status says “Success”.
Read the Pages report
Open Indexing, then Pages, and look at “Why pages aren’t indexed”. If your main service or product pages are on that list, fix them before anything else in this guide.
Check robots.txt
Visit yourdomain.com.my/robots.txt. If you see “Disallow: /” under “User-agent: *”, you’re blocking your whole site from search engines. This is more common on sites a developer built on a staging server than you’d expect.
Step 2: Keyword Research in Malaysia, in the Languages Your Customers Use
Malaysians rarely search in neat textbook English. A patient looking for a dentist in Petaling Jaya might type “dentist PJ”, “klinik gigi near me” or “牙医 PJ”, and all three are real searches with different competition. Most generic beginner guides skip this completely, which is why keyword research Malaysia businesses can act on has to cover all three languages.
Set Keyword Planner to Malaysia
Under “Discover new keywords”, set the location to Malaysia (or to your state if you only serve Selangor or Johor) and enter three or four seed terms for your service. Then run the BM and Chinese versions of those seeds as separate searches.
Mine Google autocomplete
Type your service followed by area names (PJ, Puchong, Shah Alam, JB, Penang) and note what Google suggests. Autocomplete shows you mixed-language phrasing that Keyword Planner often groups together or misses.
Check Search Console queries
If your site is older than a few months, open Performance, then Queries. Look for keywords with impressions but few clicks. Google already links you to these terms, so they are usually the fastest wins.
How to Sort Keywords by Intent in 10 Minutes
| Intent | Malaysian examples | Page type to target it with |
|---|---|---|
| Local | “klinik gigi near me”, “dentist PJ”, “牙医 KL”, “aircond service Puchong” | Service page plus Google Business Profile |
| Commercial | “harga servis aircond”, “scaling gigi price”, “best accounting software Malaysia” | Service, pricing or comparison page |
| Informational | “cara jaga gigi berlubang”, “how often to service aircond” | Blog post that links to the service page |
Step 3: A Technical SEO Checklist for the Basics Google Checks First
Most Malaysian searches happen on a phone, and Google indexes the mobile version of your site first. If your site is slow or broken on a mid-range Android phone over 4G, that is the version Google judges. These are the SEO basics for small business sites, and they come before any content work.
Beginner technical SEO checklist
- ✓Every page loads on HTTPS, and http versions redirect to it
- ✓Text is readable and buttons are tappable on mobile without zooming
- ✓PageSpeed Insights mobile Core Web Vitals within Google’s “good” thresholds: LCP under 2.5 seconds, INP under 200 ms, CLS under 0.1
- ✓No broken internal links or 404 pages linked from your menu
- ✓A unique title tag on every page (template sites often repeat “Home | Company Name” across dozens of pages)
On WordPress, most of these fixes take a plugin setting or two rather than a developer. This step-by-step WordPress SEO setup walks through each one for Malaysian sites.
Client example
Sunway TCM Centre: technical fixes first, page 1 rankings next
Problem: Crawl and indexing issues were holding back a Traditional Chinese Medicine centre in the Klang Valley.
What we did: A technical rebuild, crawl and indexing fixes, then content structured so AI search could answer from it.
Result: 80% of target keywords on page 1 within 4 months, and +150% keywords ranking, including “TCM Malaysia” and “Acupuncture KL”.
Step 4: On-Page SEO, One Page at a Time
Pick your most important service page and finish it completely before you move to the next. A single page done properly does more than twenty pages done halfway.
Title tag and H1
Put the main keyword and location at the front of the title tag and keep it under about 60 characters. Before: “Home | ABC Dental”. After: “Dentist in Petaling Jaya | Klinik Gigi PJ | ABC Dental”. The H1 can say the same thing in more natural words.
First paragraph
Say what you do, where, and for whom in the first two sentences. That one paragraph helps searchers, Google and AI answers at the same time.
Internal links and image alt text
Link to the page from your homepage and from two or three related pages, using descriptive anchor text. Rename image files before you upload them and write alt text that describes what the photo shows.
FAQ section and basic schema
Add four or five real questions customers ask on WhatsApp, each answered in the first sentence. Then add LocalBusiness or Organization schema through Rank Math or Yoast so Google can read your name, address and phone number as structured data.
Images are often the heaviest thing on a Malaysian SME site and the most neglected. This guide to optimising images for search covers file sizes, formats and alt text in detail.
Clear, answer-first pages also matter for Google AI Overviews, which tend to cite pages that already rank well in the traditional results. Good on-page SEO is the first step towards AI visibility too. Once your service pages are finished, you can move on to writing blog posts that rank for the informational keywords from Step 2.
Step 5: Claim Your Google Business Profile If Customers Visit or Call You
For clinics, contractors, restaurants, workshops and any business that serves an area, the Google Maps results often appear above the normal results. Skip this step only if you run a pure online store with no physical location or service area.
Choose the right primary category
Use the most specific one (“Dental clinic”, not “Health”). Add secondary categories only for services you actually offer.
Keep your NAP identical everywhere
Your name, address and phone number should match on your website, your profile and directories, down to “Jalan” versus “Jln”. List a number that also takes WhatsApp, because that’s how most Malaysians will contact you.
Upload real photos
Shopfront, signage, team and work in progress. Stock images do nothing for trust.
Build a review routine
Copy your review link from the profile and WhatsApp it to every customer within a day of the job or visit. A steady trickle of reviews beats a burst followed by months of silence.
Profile work is only half of the local SEO Malaysia businesses need. Location pages, citations and review strategy make up the rest, and our local SEO services page explains how those parts fit together for multi-area businesses.
Step 6: Earn Trust Signals Without Buying Backlinks
Google’s quality guidelines describe E-E-A-T: experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust. For a small business, that means visible proof that real, qualified people stand behind the site.
- Author bios with real names, qualifications and years in the trade
- Your own photos of your team, premises and finished work
- Case pages showing a specific job, the problem and the outcome
- Membership listings with Malaysian industry associations, such as the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers or your professional body
- Mentions from suppliers, distributors and partners who already list their stockists or clients online
Avoid the “1,000 backlinks for RM199” packages you see advertised in Facebook groups. They’re usually links from spam networks that Google ignores at best and penalises at worst. Our guide on how to spot an SEO scam lists the other warning signs.
Step 7: Track Calls and WhatsApp Clicks, Not Just Traffic
A page that ranks well but brings no enquiries isn’t helping your business. You can only tell whether SEO is working if GA4 counts the actions that lead to revenue, and in Malaysia that usually means a WhatsApp click.
Install Google Tag Manager
Add the container to your site, then enable the built-in Click URL variable.
Create two link-click triggers
One fires when the Click URL contains “wa.me” or “api.whatsapp.com”. The other fires when the Click URL starts with “tel:”.
Send GA4 events
Attach a GA4 event tag to each trigger (for example whatsapp_click and phone_click), then mark both as key events in GA4 Admin.
Test it
Tap your own WhatsApp button on your phone and confirm the event shows up in GA4 Realtime or DebugView.
At Newnormz this is the “Data loop” in our RANKED Framework. Every keyword decision gets checked against calls, WhatsApp chats and forms, not rankings alone. You can run the same loop yourself once these events are recording.
How Long SEO Takes in Malaysia: A Week-by-Week 90-Day Beginner Plan
Search “how long does SEO take Malaysia” and you’ll find answers anywhere from three weeks to two years. Here’s the plan we’d give a beginner, built on the same timeline we use with clients.
| Weeks | Task | What you should see |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | Steps 1 and 7: Search Console, sitemap, GA4 with WhatsApp and call tracking | Search Console data starts appearing; test events show in GA4 |
| 3 to 4 | Step 2 keyword list in three languages; Step 3 technical fixes | Fewer “not indexed” pages; better mobile PageSpeed scores |
| 5 to 8 | Step 4 on your top 5 pages; Step 5 Google Business Profile | Impressions rising in Search Console; first profile views and calls |
| 9 to 12 | Step 6 trust signals; first two blog posts; review the data | Early ranking movement on less competitive keywords; first tracked enquiries |
For context, this is the timeline Newnormz gives paying clients: technical fixes in weeks 2 to 6, first ranking movement between day 60 and 90, traffic and lead growth in months 4 to 8, and authority that compounds from month 8 to 12 onwards. A beginner working part-time should expect the same curve or a slower one. Ninety days gets the foundation in place, not the finished result.
Five Beginner Mistakes We Keep Finding in Malaysian Site Audits
✗ Changing URLs during a redesign without redirects
Every old URL that ranked becomes a 404. My Lovely Baby, a baby shop selling online and in retail, saw its traffic drop overnight after a site upgrade broke its URLs. After our migration audit and recovery, it got back 100% of the lost traffic and reached 85% of target keywords on page 1 within 9 months. That’s the recovery timeline. Avoiding the problem would have cost nothing.
✓ The fix
Before launch, export every old URL and map each one to its new URL with a 301 redirect.
✗ Targeting only English keywords
This leaves BM and Chinese searches to competitors, and those searches often have far less competition.
✓ The fix
Add BM and Chinese terms to your title tags, headings and FAQs where customers really use them, or build dedicated language pages.
✗ One page targeting ten services
A “Services” page listing everything ranks strongly for nothing.
✓ The fix
Give each money service its own page, with its own keyword, title tag and FAQ.
✗ Noindex left on after launch
WordPress’s “Discourage search engines from indexing this site” box often gets ticked during development and never unticked.
✓ The fix
Check Settings, then Reading, today. Then check the Pages report in Search Console for “Excluded by noindex tag”.
✗ Judging SEO at week 3
Beginners give up just before the point where results usually start.
✓ The fix
Judge progress by impressions and indexing in the first two months, and by tracked enquiries from month four.

DIY SEO vs Hiring an SEO Agency: A Ringgit-Based Decision Rule
DIY SEO is only free if your time is free. Here’s the maths. The seven steps above take roughly 8 hours a week, which is about 35 hours a month. If your time as an owner or manager is worth RM80 an hour, that’s about RM2,800 a month. At RM100 an hour, it’s about RM3,500.
Compare that with published Malaysian market rates: freelancers charge RM800 to RM2,500 a month, and SME-focused agencies RM1,500 to RM8,000 a month. Newnormz Starter is RM2,900 a month (excluding SST), month to month.
If the maths points to hiring, compare a few providers on their reporting, contract terms and how they track leads. You can see how we work with our SEO services in Malaysia, including our multilingual team of strategists working in English, BM and Chinese.
Being small isn’t the disadvantage it looks like. This piece on how small businesses compete with big brands shows where an SME can outrank a larger competitor.
SEO for Beginners: Questions Malaysians Ask First
Can I learn SEO on my own in Malaysia?
Yes. The basics in this tutorial need no paid course or tools. The harder part is staying consistent for several months, which is where most self-taught efforts stall.
How long does SEO take to show results for a new website?
Expect first ranking movement around day 60 to 90, and traffic and lead growth in months 4 to 8. New domains in competitive industries can take longer, and Google states that no one can guarantee a specific ranking position.
Is SEO free if I do it myself?
The tools are free, but your time isn’t. At about 35 hours a month, work out what those hours are worth to your business before calling it free.
What is the first thing a beginner should do for SEO?
Set up Google Search Console and submit your sitemap. It shows you whether Google can find and index your pages, and nothing else works until that’s true.
Do I need to target Bahasa Malaysia keywords as well as English?
Usually yes, if your customers include Malay speakers. BM and Chinese queries often have less competition, so they can rank sooner than the English equivalents.
Do I need paid tools like Ahrefs or Semrush to start SEO?
No. Search Console, GA4, Keyword Planner and PageSpeed Insights cover everything in the first 90 days. Paid tools become useful later for competitor and backlink research.
How much does it cost to hire someone for SEO in Malaysia?
Freelancers typically charge RM800 to RM2,500 a month, and SME-focused agencies RM1,500 to RM8,000 a month. Enterprise agencies run from RM10,000 to RM30,000+ a month for larger, multi-market campaigns.
