To improve website conversion rate, do three things in this order. First, measure every enquiry route properly, including WhatsApp taps, phone calls and form submits. Second, remove friction on mobile, where most Malaysian visitors arrive. Third, make the offer obvious above the fold. Most Malaysian sites don’t have a traffic problem. They have a leak, and buying more clicks before fixing it only makes the leak more expensive.
Why a 1% Conversion Lift Is Worth More Than Doubling Your Ad Budget
Business owners often treat traffic as the only lever they can pull. The maths says otherwise. Take a service business with 3,000 visitors a month, a 25% close rate on enquiries and an average sale of RM2,000. All figures below are illustrative, so swap in your own.
| Illustrative scenario | Visitors | Leads | Monthly revenue | Cost per lead (at RM1.50 CPC) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Today, 1% conversion | 3,000 | 30 | RM15,000 | RM150 |
| Fix the site, 2% conversion | 3,000 | 60 | RM30,000 | RM75 |
| Buy traffic, stay at 1% | 6,000 | 60 | RM30,000 | RM150, plus about RM4,500 more spend each month |
Both routes reach RM30,000. The traffic route costs roughly RM4,500 extra every month, forever. The conversion route is mostly a one-off cost, and it halves your cost per lead on every click you buy afterwards, including the ones from SEO and social.
Fix the leak before you pay for more water. Every ringgit of ad spend works harder on a page that converts.
Before You Change Anything: Fix What Your Website Conversion Rate Is Actually Measuring
Here is the problem we see in Malaysian audits again and again. A business gets most of its enquiries through WhatsApp and phone calls, yet Google Analytics 4 only counts form submits. The reported conversion rate looks terrible, the owner concludes the website “doesn’t work”, and money gets spent fixing the wrong thing.
WhatsApp button conversion tracking and click-to-call tracking don’t happen by default. A tap on a wa.me link opens another app, so GA4 sees nothing unless you tell it to. The fix takes an afternoon in Google Tag Manager. Here is the conversion tracking GA4 setup we use on most WordPress sites.
Create link-click triggers in Google Tag Manager
Enable the built-in Click URL variable. Add a “Just Links” trigger where Click URL contains “wa.me” (add “api.whatsapp.com” too if your plugin uses it), and a second where Click URL starts with “tel:”.
Fire GA4 event tags with clear names
Use names like whatsapp_click and phone_click. For forms, a thank-you page view is usually more reliable than GTM’s form trigger, because many WordPress form plugins submit without a standard page event.
Test, then mark them as key events
Check each tag in GTM Preview and GA4 DebugView on your own phone. Once the events show up in GA4, mark them as key events so they count in your conversion reports.
Send them to Google Ads if you run ads
Import the key events so Google’s bidding learns from real enquiries instead of page views.
If you also run paid campaigns, our walkthrough shows how to track WhatsApp clicks and form submissions inside Google Ads as well.
Newnormz take
Measurement comes first in our RANKED Framework for a reason. Its final stage, the Data loop, is call, WhatsApp and form attribution. Without it, you can’t tell whether any change below helped, hurt or did nothing.
Quick Wins You Can Ship This Week
If you’re working out how to increase website conversions without touching your ad budget, start here. These four changes need a few hours each, little or no developer time, and they often make a visible difference within a month.
1. Put the Offer, Price Signal and WhatsApp Button Above the Fold on Mobile
Open GA4’s device report and you will almost certainly find that phones dominate your traffic. Yet most sites are still designed on a desktop monitor. On a phone, the first screen should say what you sell, who it’s for, a price signal (“from RM180” or “packages from RM3,500”) and a way to reach you. That one screen decides your mobile conversion rate more than anything below it.
Add a sticky bottom bar with WhatsApp and Call buttons. Then use a prefilled message in the link, such as wa.me/60XXXXXXXXX?text=Hi, I’m asking about aircond servicing (Puchong page). The visitor doesn’t need to type an opening line, and your sales team sees which page produced the chat, something GA4 alone can’t tell you once the conversation moves into WhatsApp Business.
For a fuller picture of what a high-converting page layout looks like, from headline to footer, see our design breakdown.
Effort: 2 to 4 hours on most WordPress themes.
2. Cut Form Fields to Name, Phone and One Qualifying Question
Each extra field is another reason to give up halfway. Most enquiries need only a name, a phone number and one question that sorts serious buyers from browsers, such as “Which area are you in?” or “When do you need this?”.
✗ Asking for company size, budget, address and email before the first conversation
It feels efficient for sales, but visitors who aren’t ready to share all of that simply leave. You lose the lead before you get to qualify it.
✓ The fix
Collect the rest on the call or in WhatsApp. Under the button, add one short PDPA line: “We use your details only to reply to this enquiry,” with a link to your privacy notice. That’s clear consent without a wall of legal text.
3. Match the Landing Page to the Ad or Search Query Word for Word
If the ad says “aircond servicing Puchong”, the headline should say “Aircond Servicing in Puchong”, not “Welcome to ABC Engineering”. Visitors need a few seconds to confirm they’ve landed in the right place, and an exact match gives them that.
Relevance also counts with Google. Landing page experience is one of the components of Google Ads Quality Score, so a matched page can lift your landing page conversion rate and help your ads too.
Effort: an hour per page if you duplicate a template.
4. Add Proof Next to the Button, Not at the Bottom of the Page
Your Google review rating, client logos and before-and-after photos do their job when the visitor is deciding whether to tap. Placed under the footer, they go unseen. Put a one-line rating (“4.9 from 180 Google reviews”) directly above or beside your main WhatsApp button, and repeat it near every form.
Fixes That Take a Month but Keep Paying Back
5. Get Mobile Load Time Under Control
Website speed and conversions are linked for a simple reason: people can’t enquire on a page that hasn’t loaded. Run your key pages through PageSpeed Insights and check the Core Web Vitals section. Google’s own guidance treats a Largest Contentful Paint of 2.5 seconds or less as “good”.
On WordPress and Elementor sites, the usual problems are the same: oversized hero images uploaded straight from a phone, 30 or more plugins loading scripts on every page, and cheap shared hosting that slows down at peak hours. Our guide covers practical fixes for slow-loading pages in the order we’d tackle them.
6. Build Separate Landing Pages for Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese Searchers
Plenty of Malaysians search in Bahasa Malaysia or Chinese, then land on an English page and leave. Translation alone won’t fix that. Each audience needs proof and an offer that fit what it cares about. A confinement centre’s BM page may need to answer halal meal questions in the first screen. Its Chinese page might lead with traditional 坐月子 practices and reviews written in Chinese.
This is why multilingual ad copy testing (our Google Ads Growth package tests copy in three languages every month) only pays off when the landing pages match the language of the ad.
7. Offer the Payment Methods Malaysians Actually Use at Checkout
For ecommerce, a card-only checkout loses buyers. Make sure WooCommerce or your platform supports FPX online banking, DuitNow QR and e-wallets such as Touch ‘n Go eWallet. Be honest about the competition too: Shopee and Lazada have saved addresses, vouchers and one-tap payment. Your own store needs a reason to buy direct, such as bundles, faster delivery or a membership price.
We go deeper on conversion tactics for Malaysian online stores, including checkout and cart recovery.
8. Watch 20 Session Recordings Before Redesigning Anything
Microsoft Clarity is free and shows session recordings and heatmaps. Watch 20 mobile sessions from people who left without converting. You’ll see where they stall, which images they tap expecting a link (rage clicks), and where they scroll past your offer. These are the UX improvements for more leads that no opinion in a meeting room will uncover.
Write down every repeated problem. Three visitors stuck on the same dropdown is a pattern worth fixing this week.

Bigger Bets: When a Redesign Is the Right Call (and How Not to Lose Your Rankings Doing It)
A redesign is the most expensive fix on this list and often the least necessary. Much of the conversion rate optimisation Malaysia SMEs get sold starts with a rebuild anyway. Use this rule instead.
The danger is that a rebuild done to chase conversions can wipe out the traffic you were trying to convert. If URLs change without 301 redirects, Google treats your ranking pages as gone.
Client example
My Lovely Baby: recovering from a site upgrade that broke URLs
Problem: A site upgrade broke URLs and organic traffic dropped overnight.
What we did: A migration audit, then a recovery plan to restore the lost URLs and rankings.
Result: 100% of lost traffic recovered, and 85% of target keywords on page 1 within 9 months for terms such as “baby shop”, “baby stroller” and “baby car seat”.
Recovery is possible, but it takes months you could have avoided. Before launch, map every old URL to its new one, keep the 301 redirects in place permanently, and crawl the new site on staging. Protecting rankings during a rebuild is SEO work, so bring in your SEO team or an SEO agency in Malaysia before the developer starts, not after traffic drops.
When you shortlist web design Malaysia providers, ask to see conversion tracking, mobile speed and landing page design in the scope, not just the visual mock-ups. Our web design services in Malaysia are scoped around those three.
How to Prioritise: An Effort-vs-Payoff Table for Your First 90 Days

Effort figures are rough guides for a typical SME WordPress site. Impact depends on how broken things are today.
| Strategy | Effort | Expected impact | Who can do it |
|---|---|---|---|
| GA4 key events for WhatsApp, calls, forms | 3 to 5 hours | High (makes everything else measurable) | Marketer |
| Mobile above-the-fold offer and sticky WhatsApp bar | 2 to 4 hours | High | Owner or marketer |
| Shorter forms with PDPA line | 1 hour | Medium | Owner |
| Query-matched landing pages | 1 hour per page | High for paid traffic | Marketer |
| Proof beside buttons | 1 to 2 hours | Medium | Owner |
| Mobile speed fixes | 1 to 3 days, plus possible hosting upgrade | Medium to high | Developer |
| BM and Chinese landing pages | 1 to 2 weeks | High if those audiences search for you | Marketer with native writers |
| Local payment methods (ecommerce) | 2 to 5 days | High for online stores | Developer |
| Clarity session review | 2 hours a month | Medium (finds the next fix) | Owner or marketer |
| Full redesign | 1 to 3 months | High, but risky without SEO precautions | Agency or developer with SEO team |
When A/B testing small business pages is a waste of time: if fewer than about 1,000 people a month visit the page, skip A/B testing tools. Split that traffic two ways and you won’t get enough enquiries per version to tell which one won. Make one change at a time and compare month on month in GA4 instead.
To check nothing basic is missing before you start, run through our full website conversion checklist.
Is the Problem Your Website or Your Traffic?
A website not getting enquiries isn’t always a website problem. Sometimes the page is fine and the wrong people are arriving.
Quick diagnosis
Open your Google Ads search terms report or the Queries report in Search Console. If visitors leave quickly and the search terms include “free”, “jobs”, “DIY” or locations you don’t serve, you have a traffic quality problem. No redesign will fix it. If the search terms are right and people still leave, the page is the problem.
When qualified traffic meets a matched page, the numbers look very different.
Client example
Chiropractic centre, PJ: leads that turned into appointments
Problem: The centre needed appointments, not just clicks, from a RM4,300 monthly ad budget.
What we did: Targeted high-intent searches and sent them to pages that matched what was searched.
Result: 224 qualified leads at RM18.74 per lead and 15x ROAS within 60 days, with 60 to 70% of leads becoming appointments.
Another point of comparison: a KL confinement centre on a RM2,550 monthly budget got 266 qualified leads in its first 30 days at RM9.58 per lead, once tracking and landing pages lined up. These are results from specific campaigns, not promises, but they show what a cost per lead can look like when nothing is leaking.
If your diagnosis points to traffic, these Google Ads strategies for service businesses explain how to tighten targeting so fewer wasted clicks reach the page.
FAQs: How to Improve Website Conversion Rate in Malaysia
What is a good website conversion rate in Malaysia?
There’s no single good number, because conversion rates vary widely by industry, price point and what you count as a conversion. A WhatsApp tap and a completed RM5,000 order aren’t comparable, so be wary of any average website conversion rate Malaysia agencies quote without saying what they counted. Your own month-on-month trend, measured consistently, tells you far more than any published average.
Why is my website getting traffic but no enquiries?
Usually it’s one of three causes: enquiries are happening but not being tracked, the traffic is the wrong audience, or the mobile page hides the offer and contact options. Check tracking first, then your search terms, then watch session recordings in Microsoft Clarity.
Should a WhatsApp click count as a conversion?
Yes, track it as a GA4 key event, but treat it as intent rather than a confirmed lead. Some people tap and never send a message. Use labels in WhatsApp Business to count real enquiries, and compare the two numbers each month.
How long does it take to see results from conversion rate optimisation?
Tracking fixes show up within days, and quick wins can usually be judged after four to eight weeks. On low-traffic sites you need at least a full month of data per change to separate a real improvement from normal week-to-week swings.
Is A/B testing worth it for a small business website?
Usually not if the page gets fewer than about 1,000 visitors a month. Neither version will collect enough enquiries to produce a reliable winner. Make one change at a time and compare month on month instead.
Does website speed really affect conversions?
Yes, because visitors on mobile data often leave before a slow page finishes loading. Use PageSpeed Insights to check your Core Web Vitals, and fix images, plugins and hosting before anything cosmetic.
Should I fix my website or spend more on ads first?
Fix the website first if your tracking is incomplete or the mobile page hides your offer. Every extra ringgit of ad spend sent to a leaking page raises your cost per lead. Scale the budget once the page converts and you can measure it.
Do I need a website redesign to improve conversions?
Most sites don’t. Tracking, mobile layout, forms and proof can all be fixed on the existing site. Redesign only if your platform blocks those fixes, and plan the 301 redirects before launch so you don’t lose rankings.
