If you searched “meta description SEO Malaysia” because a plugin flagged your pages, here’s the short answer: meta descriptions are not a Google ranking factor, and Google Search Central says so in plain words. Google also replaces many of them with text from the page itself. What a good description can still do is win more clicks from the rankings you already have. So treat it as click-through-rate copy. Write it properly for the 10 or 20 pages with the most impressions, and stop worrying about the “missing meta description” warning on the other 280.

Do Meta Descriptions Affect SEO Rankings? What Google Has Actually Said

Most Malaysian site owners come to this question from a plugin warning. Yoast SEO or Rank Math puts an orange dot next to a page, an audit tool lists 300 “missing meta descriptions”, and the fix starts to look like a week of work. So, does meta description affect SEO enough to justify that week? Before you spend it, it helps to know what the tag does and what it doesn’t.

Not a Ranking Signal, But Still Shown on Most Results

Is meta description a ranking factor? No. Google said so on its Webmaster Central blog back in 2009: it sometimes uses the description meta tag for snippets, but not for ranking. That position hasn’t changed. Google Search Central’s “Control your snippets in search results” documentation describes the meta description as one possible source for the search snippet, used when it describes the page better than the page’s own text does.

Google has also said publicly that no one can guarantee a specific ranking position. Put those two facts together and you get an honest view. A perfect meta description won’t move a page from position 14 to position 4, and any agency that says it will is selling you something.

Why Google Rewrites Your Meta Description (and When It Keeps It)

Google builds the snippet for each search, not for each page. If someone’s query matches what your description says, Google usually shows it. If not, Google pulls a sentence from the page that fits the query better. A study by Ahrefs found Google rewrote the meta description roughly 6 times out of 10, and rewrites were more common on long-tail and question-style searches.

So Google rewriting meta description copy doesn’t mean you’ve done something wrong. A page that ranks for 400 different queries can’t have one description that suits all of them. Your description does its job on the main query, and the page copy covers the rest. Google is also moving further towards generated text, and we’ve covered how AI-written snippets are changing descriptions in a separate piece.

If you need to control what Google shows, the documentation lists two directives: nosnippet, which blocks the snippet completely, and max-snippet:[number], which caps its length. Most businesses never need either of them.

Where the Real Payoff Sits: Clicks From Rankings You Already Have

Once a page ranks, the snippet is your pitch. The title tag does most of the work and the description backs it up. Together they decide whether a searcher on a phone in Puchong taps your result or the one below it. That’s why click-through rate SEO is the useful way to think about this: same ranking, same impressions, more visits.

A meta description can’t get you to page 1. It decides how many people click once you’re there.

From our audits

The most common problem we find on Malaysian sites isn’t missing descriptions. It’s duplicate meta descriptions: a theme default repeated on every page, the homepage blurb copied onto service pages, or Rank Math and Yoast auto-filling the first sentence, so 50 pages open with “Welcome to our website”. Duplicates don’t get you penalised, but they tell Google the description is useless and it ignores them. They also often come with wider duplicate content across your site, which is worth fixing first.

Meta Description SEO Malaysia: Length and Format for English, BM and Chinese Searchers

Most length advice online assumes an English-only audience. Malaysian sites often serve three languages, and each one fills the snippet differently.

Pixels, Not Characters: The 2026 Length Rule of Thumb

Google has no official meta description character limit. It cuts snippets off by pixel width, and mobile results cut off sooner than desktop. Wide letters like “m” and “w” use more space than “i” or “l”, so two 150-character descriptions can be cut at different points. The practical rule: aim for about 140 to 155 characters and get the key message into the first 110 or so. Most Malaysian searchers are on mobile, and that’s the part they will definitely see.

The table below is our working guidance from writing in all three languages. These figures aren’t Google rules.

Language Rough safe length Notes
English About 150 characters Keyword and main benefit in the first 110 characters for mobile.
Bahasa Malaysia About 140 to 150 characters Long words like “perkhidmatan” and “pembersihan” make each idea take more space. Put the keyword first and keep to one idea.
Chinese About 70 to 80 characters Each character is roughly twice as wide as a Latin letter, so you’ll be cut off far earlier than in English.

Matching the Language of the Query, Not the Language of Your Brand

Write the description in the language people actually search in. A BM landing page needs a meta description Bahasa Malaysia searchers will actually click, not the English brand line pasted in. Chinese pages built for Chinese queries need Chinese descriptions. If they don’t match, Google is more likely to rewrite the snippet using whatever text on the page fits best.

Mixed-language queries are common too, especially on mobile: “servis aircond murah PJ”, “best kopitiam near me”, “kedai baby shop Shah Alam”. When your Search Console data shows rojak queries driving a page, a description that mixes in the same words often matches better than a perfectly formal one. Newnormz strategists work in English, Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese because all three show up in the same client’s search data all the time.

What a Better Meta Description Is Worth: A Worked Example in Ringgit

Here’s a hypothetical example, so you can decide whether a rewrite is worth an afternoon. Take a service page with 12,000 impressions a month and a 2.0% CTR. That’s 240 clicks. A sharper title and description lift CTR to 3.0%, which gives 360 clicks. You’ve gained 120 visits a month without moving a single ranking position.

At a 4% enquiry rate, those 120 visits bring in about 5 extra WhatsApp enquiries a month. To buy the same 120 clicks through Google Ads at an assumed RM2.50 per click, you’d pay about RM300 a month, every month. Done once, the rewrite keeps earning. This is why CTR belongs on your list of SEO metrics worth tracking beyond rankings.

Here’s a meta description example for a made-up aircon servicing business in the Klang Valley:

✗ Before: “Welcome to ABC Services. We are a leading company providing quality services to customers with professionalism and dedication.”

No service, no location, no reason to pick this result. It reads like every other snippet on the page, and Google will likely rewrite it anyway.

✓ The fix

“Aircon servicing in Petaling Jaya from RM80 per unit. Same-week slots, technicians who show up on time. WhatsApp us for a quote today.” (BM version: “Servis aircond di Petaling Jaya dari RM80 seunit. Slot minggu yang sama. WhatsApp untuk sebut harga hari ini.”)

Client example

Oriental Kopi: impressions and clicks are two different numbers

Problem: A national F&B and retail brand needed to rank for high-volume searches like “kopi”, “white coffee” and “3 in 1 coffee”.

What we did: Content optimised around those terms, full schema markup and ecommerce technical fixes.

Result: Over a 2-year SEO campaign, 6.31M impressions and 468,000 clicks. Rankings created the impressions. How many of those became clicks is a separate number you manage, and on big sites a small change in CTR adds up to a lot of visits.

How to Write a Meta Description That Earns the Click: 7 Meta Description Tips

When you sit down to write meta description copy, treat it as short sales copy: one promise, one proof point, one next step. Knowing how to write a good meta description is the same skill as SEO copywriting that converts, squeezed into about 150 characters.

Before you hit publish

  • ✓Match the intent of the page’s main query: someone searching for a price wants a price, and someone asking how wants a method.
  • ✓Put the keyword near the start, because Google often bolds words that match the search.
  • ✓Give one specific differentiator, such as a starting price, a location or a turnaround time.
  • ✓Add a concrete proof point (a review count, years in business, a certification) instead of “quality service”.
  • ✓End with an easy next step: “WhatsApp us”, “see prices”, “check availability”.
  • ✓Write a unique description for every page you care about, never one shared across the site.
  • ✓Leave out double quotation marks and HTML, which can cut the description short.

Borrow Wording That Has Already Won in Google Ads

If you run Google Ads, you already have CTR test results that most organic writers never see. Ad copy that wins against other versions shows which benefit Malaysians actually click on: price, speed, location, or “no hidden charges”. Use that winning angle in your organic descriptions. Newnormz’s Growth Google Ads plan includes monthly ad copy testing in three languages, and that’s where we often find the best wording for BM and Chinese snippets.

When Meta Descriptions Matter More, Less, or Not at All

The right effort depends on how much search exposure the page already gets. Use these rules to decide.

If the page gets under 100 impressions a month
Then skip the description for now. The page has a ranking or content problem, and better snippet copy can’t fix that.
If the page sits in positions 1 to 5 with a lower CTR than your other pages at similar positions
Then rewrite the title and description now. These pages give the best return for the time spent.
If you have hundreds or thousands of product pages
Then use a template with variable fields (brand, price, stock, delivery), and put your effort into writing product listings that rank.
If the page answers informational queries that Google AI Overviews are likely to cover
Then spend your time on the title tag and the page’s opening answer instead. Google rewrites more snippets for these queries, so read up on zero-click searches in Malaysia.
If it’s a blog post with no real search demand
Then leave the plugin default and move on.

Your Next 30 Minutes: Find the Pages Where a Rewrite Pays Off

1

Open the Performance report in Search Console

In Google Search Console, turn on impressions, clicks, CTR and average position, set the range to the last 3 months, and switch to the Pages tab. Sort by impressions.

2

Spot high impressions with a weak CTR for their position

Look for pages ranking on page 1 whose CTR is clearly below that of your other pages at similar positions. Those are your rewrite list.

3

Find missing and duplicate descriptions

Crawl the site with Screaming Frog (free up to 500 URLs) or use the Rank Math or Yoast checks. While you’re in there, look over the rest of your on-page SEO, especially title tags.

4

Rewrite the top 10, and only the top 10

Use the seven tips above, in the language of each page’s main queries. Write down the date you made each change.

5

Compare CTR after 4 to 6 weeks

Compare the same date range before and after, and check that average position stayed roughly the same so you’re comparing like with like. On a site with hundreds of pages in three languages, this check never really ends, and that ongoing work is a big part of what SEO services in Malaysia should cover.

Meta Description FAQs

Does a meta description affect SEO rankings in Google?

No, Google does not use the meta description as a ranking signal. It has said so since 2009. A description can still raise your click-through rate, which means more visits from the positions you already hold.

What is the best meta description length in 2026?

About 140 to 155 characters for English, with the key message in the first 110 or so. Google cuts snippets off by pixel width rather than a fixed character count, so Chinese descriptions should be much shorter, around 70 to 80 characters.

Why does Google change my meta description?

Google changes it when other text on your page matches the search better. This happens most on long-tail and question queries. Ahrefs’ study found rewrites happened roughly 6 times out of 10.

Should every page have a unique meta description?

Every page that gets real search impressions should have a unique description. Duplicates won’t get you penalised, but Google tends to ignore them. For low-traffic pages, leaving the field empty is better than copying one description across the site.

Should I write my meta description in Bahasa Malaysia or English?

Write it in the language of the page and of the queries it ranks for. A BM page targeting BM searches needs a BM description. If Search Console shows mixed-language queries, using some of the same words can improve the match.

How do I check whether my meta description is working?

Compare the page’s CTR in the Google Search Console Performance report for 4 to 6 weeks before and after the change. Make sure average position stayed about the same. Otherwise you’re measuring a ranking change, not the description.
